Cybrary Man: How I
Taught....Consumerism
There are many learning
opportunities to explore at the local grocery store or supermarket.
I developed a good relationship with the local grocery store
manager in the area where I taught. He used to provide me with class
sets of weekly advertising specials. He also enjoyed giving
students a tour of his store and he had the employees in the store
tell the students what their jobs were. I taught students about
making shopping lists, coupons, sales, BOGO (Buy One and Get
One) comparison shopping, unit
pricing, sales tax, how to read food labels, freshness codes,
advertising, name-brand, store brand and the generic alternative.
They also learned about product placement.
