I feel home visits are important but please practice safety when doing them.  I was discouraged and reprimanded by an administrator for doing home visits because I worked in a very high crime neighborhood. A principal in our school district made a home visit and he was beaten up.  Please be careful!

You might want to consider a Skype or Google Hangout Home Visit especially when parents do not want you to be physically present in their home.  Or, schedule to meet the parent in a public place like a public library.
