Teachers and other educators will be able to deduct up to $250 in expenses ($500 for married couples in education) for books, materials and other classroom expenses on their federal tax forms for 2009.  The deduction is available to educators working in public or private elementary or secondary schools at least 900 hours during a school year as a teacher, instructor, counselor, principal or aide.  This deduction is available whether or not the taxpayer itemizes deductions on Schedule A.
