To keep  students focused had them make learning resolutions the first day of school.  Periodically throughout the year I had them reflect on how well they were doing with their resolutions.

I showed  track team members that through hard work they could achieve.  I ran with them and showed them that I was willing to do what I asked of them. This carried over with many to the classroom.
