Nothing truly prepared me for teaching in a very challenging neighborhood that was known as "The Homicide Capital of New York City." My East New York (Brooklyn) page. Not even going through Basic Training in the United States Army or the teacher preparation classes I took gave me the tools to be an effective teacher.

I addressed two groups of teacher preparation candidates at two universities.  Afterwards the participants thanked me as I was the first real classroom teacher who told it like it was.  I also was a cooperating teacher and I was also observed by college juniors in teacher prep programs.
